Funding:  Cancer Research Fund of the University of Michigan Comprehensive Cancer Center (CCC-CRF)

Description:
The CCC-CRF grant augments the Men 4 Health (M4H) foundation grant research by expanding and building on focus group data collected in Flint, Michigan, examining broad social, cultural, and environmental barriers and facilitators to African American men's healthy eating and physical activity.

This project is designed to: (a) examine how similar and different men's perceived environmental context are in three Michigan cities; and (b) study and compare factors influencing men's motivation to engage in healthy eating and recommended levels of physical activity.

This will provide us with important information for building an individually tailored intervention to reduce cancer risk among these populations.

The specific aims of the CCC-CRF research are:
(1) Compare the relationships between cognitive, social, economic, and environmental factors and healthy eating and physical activity for urban African American men in three Michigan cities:  Flint, Ypsilanti, and Detroit.
(2) Examine African American men's motivations to engage in healthy eating and recommended levels of physical activity.
