Funding: Michigan Center for Urban African American Aging Research (MCUAAAR)
Description:
The MCUAAAR grant provides additional resources to analyze the M4H qualitative focus group data on older, African American men's eating and physical activity collected in Detroit, Flint and Ypsilanti, Michigan. It will facilitate analysis of data collected in these cities to examine social, cultural, and environmental barriers and facilitators to older, urban African American men's healthy eating and physical activity.
These analyses will be used to inform interventions to help older African American men adopt healthier lifestyles in each of these cities.
The specific aims of the MCUAAAR research are:
(1) Examine how the relationship between stressors, coping behaviors and social supports and healthy eating and physical activity are similar and different for older (50+), African American men in Flint, Ypsilanti, and Detroit, Michigan.
(2) Examine how African American men's motivations to engage in healthy eating and recommended levels of physical activity are affected by their stressors and coping strategies, with a particular focus on the influence of phase of life.
(3) Compare women's and men’s perspectives on factors that affect men’s eating and physical activity in Flint, Ypsilanti, and Detroit, Michigan.
